In happier times, we never bought groceries online. We preferred seeing what we’re buying. My husband especially enjoys comparing prices of items. If toilet paper is cheaper in Grocery One, he buys there. If milk has a lower price in Grocery Two, that’s where he’ll buy. He had his motorbike fixed and tuned up for places where car parks are always full (or non-existent).
He likes being able to go out everyday, actually. He’s not like me who is immune to cabin fever. If there are no errands, he rides his motorbike around the subdivision just to get out of the house. He calls it roaming like a dog. But, you know, he can’t do that now. No grocery shopping and no roaming like a dog. He can’t get into the grocery, to begin with. Too crowded. No social distancing observed. Ergo, too risky.
So, I said we’d try online grocery shopping. Landers. I could renew my expired membership online and the fee would be charged along with my purchases. Great, I thought. A couple of days ago, I started putting items in my virtual cart and checked out (on trial, so no big purchases). No same day delivery. I did some mental calculations, decided we had enough meat in the freezer until the delivery date.
Between the order date and delivery date, all the meat and chicken that I ordered got “sold out” according to an e-mail I received today, the day of delivery. Worse, delivery is now overdue (update: delivery will be late but is on its way, according to a text message).
I’m trying to be understanding. People are panic-buying (hoarding even) and I can’t be the only one doing online grocery shopping. Landers must be swamped. Besides, we live in the suburbs. But, you know, patience won’t feed me and my family. I needed to look for another online grocery.
Plan B. Metromart. I registered and ordered. Again, delivery will take several days.
Meanwhile, we have to make do with what we have. We just need to be creative. Last night, dinner was two packs of instant noodles. Korean. The spicy kind. I have low tolerance for chili-laden food but my daughter, Alex, fixed the problem by adding the last of the fresh oyster mushrooms in the fridge. She even managed to salvage the last remaining stalks of scallions to make the dish more visually attractive.
Spicy Noodles with Oyster Mushrooms
- 250 grams oyster mushrooms
- 2 packs spicy instant noodles (see notes after the recipe)
- 1 tablespoon cooking oil
- sliced scallions to garnish (optional)
- Cut off the root ends of the oyster mushrooms and discard. If the mushrooms are large, tear them into smaller pieces.
- Boil water in a pan and drop in the noodles (reserve the seasonings). Drain the noodles.
- Heat the cooking oil in a pan.
- Saute the oyster mushrooms with the seasoning from one pack of instant noodles.
- Add the boiled noodles to the mushrooms. Toss.
- Add the seasoning from the second pack of noodles. Continue tossing until the noodles are heated through and the seasonings are distributed evenly.
- Top with sliced scallions, optionally, and serve.
